Here I am going to share my experience about keeping windows error-free! Every pc user at some point of time faces some errors, slowdown or such other performance issues. Like all others, me too often had to deal with such annoyances few years ago when I was high-school student. But later I found out the easiest way to get rid-off such factors as far as possible. And now from about last two years my computer is almost error-free.
First you have to know a little about the kind of windows operating system related problems that most of the user faces. Among these, the problems related to registry, applications, corrupt system files, BSOD, slow boot-up, long execution time of applications, memory dump, sudden HDD failures, etc are common. Therefore we all always have to prepare with handy solutions to fix such annoyances as well as to raise the system immunity to fight these.
Now let’s focus on solutions. Every system will be severely affected by viruses, malware, spyware, bots, other malicious scripts either over internet or through offline mediums like flash-drives, external HDD, memory cards, etc in the absence of proper security softwares. In order to protect our system from being infected by these harmful factors, we must use a good standard anti-virus or internet security suites, firewall. There are a lot of such useful products available for purchase for lifetime or year wise. But its not possible always for everybody specially for the home users to buy such expensive security softwares and renew them yearly. Therefore I am going to show you how to build your own security suite without paying anything and this suite will be as good as the paid ones.
So first grab one known anti-virus program like
AVG FREE,
AVAST FREE, etc (both are good and I like avast! personally) and install it with latest virus-definition updates. If you have a regular internet connection then set the anti-virus software to update automatically, otherwise I would suggest to update them manually every week/month. Next grab one free firewall software like
PC TOOLS FIREWALL PLUS,etc and install as well as update regularly. Firewalls can help prevent automatic installation of harmful scripts etc specially when you are working over internet. In windows versions XP, Vista or 7, you can find their own default firewall but its best to turn off the default and use as I just suggested. A single anti-virus software is not enough to protect you from all threats specially when you are connected to internet. To support your anti-virus, grab one free anti-spyware/malware software like
SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY and update it regularly. For now you are done as you just created your own security suite for free which will give all kind of protections. Now-a-days free anti-virus programs like AVAST etc gives the users almost all-in-one commercial security features like real-time monitoring, network monitoring, web shield, etc.
As we are ready to prevent security threats of viruses, scripts, spywares etc with our own security suite, let’s now concentrate on other factors. Every pc user at a point of time suffers from computer slowdown. There can be several reasons behind this. Among them, the most common are registry, file fragmentation, startup items, etc. We have a tendency of testing/installing every new/old software and sometime we do such without even knowing about which software meant for what. We keep the softwares we like and remove the disliked ones and this continuous process of installing/uninstalling applications acts as a major cause of pc slowdown. Mainly because when we uninstall a software, it lefts behind a good number of useless/unwanted files as well as registry entries. Therefore to simplify the uninstallation process I would suggest you to use specialized uninstallation softwares(stop using add/remove or, softwares own uninstaller!!) as they can help removing applications from your pc without leaving useless/unwanted files/entries/shortcuts, etc. You can use REVO UNINSTALLER FREE to do this and I can say its a great uninstaller with “ease of use”.

Besides, frequent uninstallation of softwares & some other factors increases the size of your windows registry by adding unused/invalid keys/entries. We can solve this manually by registry-editing but its dangerous! Manual registry editing requires expert knowledge & thus we should avoid manual process, otherwise one wrong thing can break system stability. To keep the registry clutter free we should use softwares like CCLEANER FREE etc. Using such softwares have more benefits besides cleaning registry such as it will delete the cookies (from browsers; also a factor for computer slowdown & hacking), application use history, temporary files (they used to occupy a lot of space unnecessarily!), junk files and more.

Moreover, another important sign of an unhealthy system is “fragmentation”. We daily used to store many files (music files, videos, movies, games, etc) & also move them through our HDD besides frequent installation of softwares. All these results in huge fragmentation of files in our hard drives & slows down system performance. In order to fight this, we must use a defrag software like AUSLOGICS DISK DEFRAG FREE and should use it weekly to maintain stability. Windows has their own defragmenter but of little use as they are very slow, will take hours and may not defrag properly.
It is to be noted here that we heard of the softwares like TuneUp Utilities, Advanced System Care, Glary Utilities, etc which combines all above mentioned features (unistaller, registry cleaner, defrag special) within single package but they are mostly commercial version & requires a paid license. And in this tutorial, my objective is to show you maintaining the system without spending money.
Another important thing which often acts as a major factor behind computer slowdown is “startup items”. That is the applications which executes automatically with windows startup. Many such startup entries are of no use as we can start them anytime manually as per our wish. So I would suggest you to disable such entries that you don’t need to. We can do this in two ways – by using the command “msconfig” and by using third-party softwares. I would suggest to use the second option of third-party softwares. The above mentioned CCLEANER can give you this function for free. But for safety, check out Startup List first and then delete/disable the entries as advised.
In the conclusion of this article, I would like to remind you to always update your security and other essential softwares. Do windows updates from time to time either automatically or manually. Before installing new softwares read about them to decide whether you really need them or not. Scan each and every file before using them. Do not use pirated softwares and cracks, etc. Do not visit harmful sites like adult ones. And be careful while using P2P sites.
